Journal Club session: Evidence building in MHPSS
We are organizing the fourth Journal Club session with Carla Uriarte.
Uriarte is an MHPSS practitioner and has over 25 years of experience in humanitarian psychology. She began her career in academia, completing a DEA in Social Psychology, before shifting her focus from university research to applied interventions. Carla worked first with the Spanish Red Cross and later with Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF Spain) before joining the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), where she has spent the past decade in both field and headquarters roles. Her expertise lies in integrating mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS) into humanitarian responses for populations affected by crisis, violence, and armed conflict—including humanitarian staff and volunteers. She is also a member of the Coordination Group for the MHPSS Research Network within the Red Cross Red Crescent Movement.
The session will be based on a 2023 report written by Rebecca Horn, Promoting Mental Health and Psychosocial Support Evidence-Building in the Red Cross Red Crescent Movement. The full text of the report is available at https://mhpsshub.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/Promoting-MHPSS-evidence-building_report_2024.pdf and its summary is at https://pscentre.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/MHPSS-evidence-building_summary-1.pdf. We will focus on understanding the existing challenges in evidence building and ways of addressing them from diverse perspectives.
The session will be moderated by Dr. Sarah Davidson, the Head of Psychosocial and Mental Health at the British Red Cross.
