Against all odds and despite all challenges the MENA region is committed to mental health

The Integrated Model for Supervision (IMS) project has conducted the first inter-agency Training of Trainers in the MENA region. The training took place between 24 November and 2 December in Amman, Jordan and was hosted by the IFRC Reference Centre for Psychosocial Support soon to become the Red Cross Red Crescent Movement MHPSS Hub.

The training involved 21 MHPSS professionals from Syria, Palestine, Libya, Egypt, Somalia, Yemen, and Jordan representing 13 organisations. It was conducted in Arabic and using Arabic versions of both the IMS Handbook and Training Curriculum as well as other IMS resources that has been translated, adapted and tailored to the MENA context and needs.

The situation in the region is extremely challenging and volatile but amid wars, bombings, mass displacement and chaos, the Middle East and North Africa also represents real dedication, true commitment and unique experience from the humanitarian professionals doing everything in their power to help the people in need. The participants represent first responder organizations highly motivated to implement supportive supervision, to prioritize the well-being of staff and volunteers and enhance the quality of services to the communities they serve – they are a source of hope at a dark hour.

The participants came in well prepared through an online pre-training on ‘Becoming a Supervisor’ conducted in October 2024 is a part of the IMS ToT training package in the journey to become an IMS trainer.

Their solid level of expertise and technical skills were demonstrated throughout the training and the sharing and collaboration between national Red Cross Red Crescent societies and other NGOs provided a rich, supportive and inspirational context. The atmosphere was essential for the learning process within the training and also for the follow up process that will come in the next six months, where the participants will start implementing their organizations IMS plans.
