For the first time ever we have a rapid response mechanism that allows us deploying MHPSS experts in the emergencies in which they are needed. This is extremely important for responding to the growing needs in MHPSS in humanitarian crises.
Carmen Valle-Trabadelo Technical Advisor in the Psychosocial Centre and co-chair of the IASC Reference Group on Mental Health and Psychosocial Support in Emergency Settings
To support better integration of MHPSS within the humanitarian response and tackle the shortage of qualified MHPSS specialists, the Dutch Surge Support (DSS) MHPSS programme was launched in January 2020. This unique mechanism allows rapid deployment of MHPSS experts to support multisectoral coordination and interagency capacity. It is funded by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs and implemented by the Netherlands Enterprise and Development Agency in collaboration with the IASC Reference Group on MHPSS in Emergency Settings, Co-Chaired by the IFRC PS Centre.
As Co-Chair of the IASC Reference Group for MHPSS in Emergencies, together with WHO, the PS Centre is proud to have enabled this essential mechanism, thanks to the efforts of the Reference Group member organizations and the invaluable support of the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
